GEOPHYSICS FOR CULTURAL

PROGRAMME AND LECTURERS

PURPOSE OF THE SCHOOL

The environmental and cultural resources in Italy, particularly in the South of Italy, are the only true major resources which appear compatible with a local sustainable development. Consequently we strongly believe that a careful reassessment and management of those resources ought to foster major growth not only on terms of increased touristic activity but, and most importantly, in terms of expanded inter-European cooperation and, thus, potential scientific and technological breakthroughs.

Geophysical techniques have the great advantage of not being destructive nor invasive: their main drawbacks, however, rest on the fact that they are usually associated to limited resolution and, at times, ambiguity of interpretation. These drawbacks must be overcome if geophysical investigation methods are to become serious competitors with the more invasive methodologies developed in other disciplines.

The 11th Course will focus on scientific and technical improvements as well as methodological changes in geophysical methods, with particular attention to those based on potential-fields energy and wave-field transmission. All the steps of geophysical investigations will be treated, from the acquisition to the elaboration, inversion and interpretation of the experimental data. Several aspects of modelling techniques will be also thoroughly discussed.

The aim of the Course is to convene a group of European geophysicists, who are recognized leaders in the fields of cultural and environmental resources, and allow them to share their findings and experiences with younger scholars in the respective areas of interest.
